FAIR TRADE FOR OUR WORLD

A Fair Trade campaign for environmental and trade justice!

FAIR TRADE FOR OUR WORLD is based on the fact that fighting poverty and alleviating climate change aren’t alternatives.  Both are vital aspects of policy that lead to sustainable development.  In the South and in the North. That’s why FAIR TRADE FOR OUR WORLD calls on consumers and politicians to support Fair Trade’s efforts to minimise negative impacts on the environment while fighting global poverty through trade. FAIR TRADE FOR OUR WORLD is a global campaign. In Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia and North America.  FAIR TRADE FOR OUR WORLD is organized by NEWS - The Network of European Worldshops – and IFAT –The International Fair Trade Organisation.

CLIMATE CHANGE & THE ENVIRONMENT

The change of the world’s climate is undisputed. It will affect both North and South.  But on different levels. In southern countries over 1.1 billion people are living in absolute poverty.  Already, they are living and working under harsh climatic conditions: natural disasters such as storms, droughts and floods threaten lives directly.  As a result of climate change such events will happen more often and with greater intensity. It is lives in the South that will be most at risk.

THAT’S UNFAIR

Communities in the South have amongst the lightest environmental footprints. However these are the very people whose food security, homes and livelihoods will be most threatened by environmental destruction. The present economic system with profit at any cost undermines people and the environment. In this, climate change becomes a question of justice between the North and the South.

FAIR TRADE

Fair Trade promotes sustainable development and fights poverty. Focusing on marginalized producers and small farmers and workers in the South, Fair Trade has helped millions escape from poverty. Because Fair Trade works in long-term relationships and is committed to pay a living wage, it enables its partners to invest in environmentally friendly production.  Fair Trade supports hand production, organic agriculture and the use of recycled materials as well as the sustainable use of natural resources and production methods that are not capital or oil intensive. Fair Trade also campaigns for a trading system that puts people’s livelihoods central to trading to promote social, economic and environmental justice.  That’s why Fair Trade is fair to our world, now and in the future

FAIR TRADE SHOPS

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

Join in the postcard campaign: In the UK BAFTs are trying to target every member of parliament (all 600) to ask them to support Fair Trade Organisations in their push to change global trade rules to put people and planet before profit and to make sure the Climate Change Act has an 80% emmissions reduction target that also includes emmissions. To request a postcard please email BAFTS on info@bafts.org.uk

Organise an event to raise awareness: Visit the downloads section of the website to download the World Fair Trade Day guide with lots of ideas for events and activities.

Visit your local Fair Trade shop: You can find your nearest fair trade shop by searching on our website and also see a list of all our internet retailers. By shopping at BAFTS Fair Trade shops you are supporting marginalised producers through trade.
