Main Fair Trade Organisations and Their Roles | |
| |
|
Perhaps the best know fair trade organisation in the UK is the Fairtrade Foundation. The Fairtrade Foundation license the use of the Fairtrade label in the UK. It is key to note that the Fairtrade label is applied to a specific product, not an organisation.
Criteria for use of the Fairtrade label, and monitoring to ensure compliance, is undertaken by the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation (FLO). FLO is the worldwide Fairtrade Standard setting and Certification organisation. It permits more than 800,000 producers, workers and their dependants in 50 countries to benefit from labelled Fairtrade. Click here for their website.
IFAT is the International Fair Trade Association, the global network of Fair Trade Organizations (FTOs). Over 270 FTOs in 60 countries form the basis of the IFAT network and membership is growing steadily.
The British Association for Fair Trade Shops is, like IFAT, a representative body of fair trade organisations, but at a UK level. A key difference is that BAFTS does not represent producers, although we have a link to producers through our fair trade importers.
The Network of European World Shops represents over 2,000 fair trade shops across throughout 13 European countries through national representative bodies (BAFTS is the representative body for the UK).
In addition, there are some large and influential fair trade organisations, and many smaller organisations committed to fair trade. Links to some of the larger organisations can be found in our resources pages (see link above).
