BAFTS FAIR TRADE CRITERIA

In order to ensure the above, BAFTS has developed a set of criteria with which you need to comply in order to become a Member of our Association.

GENERAL CRITERIA

• All aspects of your work are guided by principles of mutual respect, social justice and equal partnership.
• You are transparent about, and accountable for, your working practices.

SPECIFIC CRITERIA FOR FAIR TRADE SHOPS

1. Sell 70% of Fair Trade goods (by turnover). BAFTS recognises three sources of products as being Fair Trade:
(i) Products carrying the Fairtrade Label

(ii) Products, sourced from Fair Trade producers in developing countries, purchased from a member of IFAT

(iii) Products, sourced from Fair Trade producers in developing countries, purchased from a BAFTS recognised importer

2. Showing good reason for selling other goods, and explaining this in the Membership Application Form. (Other goods might include Charity Christmas cards, environmentally friendly cleaning materials, books, music, recycled products, cards and stationery).
3. Buying from importers and selling to the public at fair prices, reflecting the value of the products.
4. Promoting and encouraging product quality either through the Importers or directly to the producers
5. Showing concern for social and environmental aspects of products, including child labour, tropical hardwood use and animal testing.
6. Paying invoices in credit time.
7. Ensuring equal opportunities for all shop staff, whether voluntary or paid, and actively opposing discrimination.
8. Showing openness to customers, by having information available on suppliers, BAFTS, aims and working practices.
9. Having an educational/campaigning aspect to the work in the shop.

If you think you meet these criteria and your shop has been trading for at least 6 months, please now complete the application. All applications are subject to a non-returnable administrative fee of £25. Please mail your cheque to the postal address above at the time of submitting your application, the cheque should be made out to The Association for Fair Trade Shops.

Your application will be subject to peer review (by our existing members) and then considered by our assessment committee. We expect to be able to give you a response within 2 months at the latest. Once your application has been approved, we ask you to pay your membership fee. When this has been received, we will announce your membership on our website, add you to our list of Association Members and send you a certificate for display in your shop.
