Direct Sourcing Retail Criteria
The distinguishing aspect for a Direct Sourcing Retailer is that under fair trade terms, they import direct from the producer organisation and retails the products directly to the consumer. They do not sell on to any other business for resale or distribution. Otherwise the criteria are the same as for a BAFTS retailer:
Any organisation that makes 'the final sale' can apply to be a BAFTS retailer. You may sell through a High Street shop, Market Stall, Web-site or any other mechanism provided you are an organisation dedicated to Fair Trade retailing.
We expect BAFTS retailers to:
- Buy a majority of goods (70% or more) from Fair Trade sources:
- importers who comply with the FINE criteria and are a WFTO FTO or are listed in the BAFTS’ Importers’ Directory
- Wholesalers of FLO marked products
- Show good reason for selling other (non Fair Trade) goods, and explaining this in the Membership Application Form.
- Buy from importers and sell to the public at fair prices, reflecting the value of the products.
- Promote and encourage product quality either through the importers or directly to the producers
- Show concern for social and environmental aspects of products, including child labour, tropical hardwood use and animal testing.
- Pay all invoices within the agreed credit period
- Ensure equal opportunities for all shop staff, whether voluntary or paid, and actively oppose discrimination.
- Show openness to customers, by having information available on suppliers, BAFTS, aims and working practices.
- Have an educational/campaigning aspect to the work in the shop.
