About Fair Trade

Fair Trade in Europe started as a grassroots movement about 40 years ago. The aim was to alleviate poverty in the 'Global South' - Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean - by building direct, sustainable relationships with disadvantaged producers and providing fair access to markets in the developed 'North'. The aims are the same now, but Fair Trade has developed into a powerful force, symbolised by a high level of European co-operation.
Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers - especially in the South.
Fair Trade organisations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practices of conventional international trade.
All involved in Fair Trade accept that it has to include: paying fair prices to producers which reflect the true cost of production, supporting producer organisations in their social and environmental projects, promoting gender equality in pay and working conditions, advising on product development to increase access to markets, committing to long term relationships to provide stability and security and campaigning to highlight the unequal system of world trade which places profit above human rights and threatens our environment.

BAFTS - Who we are and what we do

The British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers (BAFTS) is an association of retailers and recognised fair trade importers who, although independent, unite in a core purpose which is to bring about fundamental changes in the status of working producers through Fair Trade retailing and campaigning.

Through solidarity and through practical programmes of assistance, BAFTS seeks to strengthen a network of sales channels that are dedicated to its core purpose.  It seeks to improve the quality and the quantity of such channels, so that they are better able to contribute towards the building of greater justice and equity in the world.  The association and its members support campaigns that increase awareness and understanding of the needs of producer workers and of their rights.

BAFTS has an elected Board of 6 elected Directors, who are supported by one part-time Administrator. 

 BAFTS is connected to the global Fair Trade Movement through its membership of the WFTO (the World Fair Trade Association) and the Trade Justice Movement.  It recognizes the internationally agreed definition of Fair Trade:

British Association for Fair Trade Shops

The British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) is a network of independent fair trade shops and recognised fair trade importers across the UK.

We promote fair trade retailing in the UK, seek to raise the profile of fair trade on the High Street and provide a point of contact and communication for the exchange of ideas amongst our members.

We currently have approaching 100 member outlets across the UK and you can search them by region.
Further we have a similar number of recognised fair trade importers, with about 15 organisations being both retailers and importers.
