Definition of a Fair Trade Producer | |
| |
|
What makes a fair trade producer?
Clearly it is not sufficient just to be an individual or enterprise operating in a developing country.
The concept of fair trade is rooted in improving the livelihoods of poor and marginalised people from developing countries.
Thus, a fair trade producer is an enterprise that is owned by this target group of people, either as an individual or cooperative, or is an enterprise that employs people from this target group and meets certain employment standards consistent with improved livelihoods. These include fair wages, providing clean and safe working environments, allowing workers the freedom to join trade union groups, providing skills training and promotion prospects. For more detail about these employment conditions, refer to the International Labour Organisations set of standards. A good place to read more deeply on this subject is the Fairtrade Labelling Organisations website.
